What’s Your Signal??

Posted on:

All too often I see drivers not using a signal before they turn or change lanes. I don’t care if you cut me off, as long as you turn on your blinker to let me know you are coming over, that’s fine by me!

This student in one of my defensive driving classes said; “I don’t use my blinkers…ain’t nobody’s damn business where I’m going!”

If you don’t use your signals, that’s one sign you don’t know how to drive. Sorry to offend anybody, but sometimes the truth hurts. Now, I’m not a perfect driver, not by far! But with everyone in the holiday rush, use your turn signals, help reduce road rage and auto collisons.

I wish you and your’s a happy, healthy and safe new year!

Don’t Drink & Die

Posted on:

Happy Holidays and cheers to everyone! Now, I’m not anti-alcohol, as a matter of fact I love to have a couple of drinks….before I go to work and when I say work, I’m talking about when I’m performing at the comedy clubs!

But if you’re going to drink, you don’t have to drive! There are too many options, designated driver, taking keys away from a drunk (that’s always a fun time-so take up the keys before they start drinking), spend the night at wherever you are drinking, call a cab, call for a ride. Even AAA has a holiday program for safe rides. Or how about this one, drink at home…alone. Ok maybe not, that’s too depressing for the holidays. The point is, there are too many alternatives to drinking and driving. Over 17,000 people are killed in DUI related crashes every year in the U.S. Let’s make this holiday season the safest ever.

Write me with your comments and suggestions, I would love to hear them. Until next week, happy holidays and take care!

Camera tickets – Big Brother is always watching!

Posted on:

I’ve had a few students in Defensive Driving that have received red light camera tickets and speeding tickets by camera in Arizona.  Do you think red light cameras are a good thing?  Some people do and others don’t, the ones who don’t are usually the ones who think the yellow light means “SPEED UP!!”  But come on, what’s next??  What if the municipal, state or federal government wanting to install cameras in our vehicles just to make sure we are not doing anything illegal.  OK, I know that’s not even in the same ball park, but what if??

Back in 2007, Richland Hills, Texas shorten the yellow light time from 3.5 seconds to 3 seconds at one of their intersections that has a red light camera.  In June of 2007 the intersection at Booth Calloway Road and Glennview Drive had 1,440 citations for running the red light.  In July, they had 1,911 and in the month of August – 1,387.  After the local Fox 4 news ran the story, the city changed it to 3.6 seconds, guess how many citations they had in September…….321.  Redflex, the company who makes these cameras and the 35 cities in Texas who use them are making a killing!  Who scratches who’s back??

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for what ever makes the roads safer.  Maybe it’s supply and demand, if we weren’t running the red lights, there wouldn’t be a need for the cameras.  Do your part, no more running red ights!  Next time you go through an intersection or the light turns green, look both ways….it just might save your life!  Let me know what you think.

Until next week, be safe and take care.

The Wave, Dude!

Posted on:

The other day traffic was backed up and this dude was coming out of a parking lot.  When the traffic started to move I let him in, as the truck pulls in front of me, the dude doesn’t give “a wave”!  I was just as offended as if he just shot me the finger!  I don’t know why I let it get to me, it just did.  Am I wrong, Dr. Phil ??!!  Who knows, maybe the dude just had one arm and he had to use his good arm to steer.  Yes, the “one arm” theory!  OK, unlikely, but possible.

Next time someone lets you in, give a friendly, thank you wave.  I’m sure they would appreciate it.  Sorry about using the term “The Dude”, I just watched the Big Lebowski again, the other night!  Great movie!!  So is the Fugitive! (1993)

Do you give a thank you wave?  Do you wave back when some one gives you a wave?  Let me know and I’ll talk to you next week, until then…

Multitasking ourselves to death

Posted on:

A recent survey by National Mutual Insurance showed that nearly 72 % of the drivers say they multitask while driving, which included using a cell phone (texting and talking), eating, drinking, reading, and the list of all the other distractions can go on and on.  WOW 72 % – Some of you probably think that’s too low!

Now, I’m no angel, in the past I’ve done all these distractions while driving, I’ve switched an iPod, Cd’s, cassettes and yes, even an 8 track because I wanted to listen to Van Halen instead of The Eagles.  But since I’ve been teaching defensive driving, I have become enlighten to just how bad these distractions really are.  I’m sure every driver has multi-tasked at least once in their driving years, but with all these distractions like cell phones, GPS screens, even DVD players, this is becoming more and more dangerous, not only to you but everybody else sharing the road with you.

It seems like some people multitask and wear it like a badge of honor, like somehow they are more productive than those who just focus on doing one thing at a time.  Distractions are becoming the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions around the country.  This has become a nationwide epidemic!  If you must talk on the phone pull over to a safe area, if you have to dig through your CD case, do it at the red light, but pay attention to when the light changes and put away the crossword puzzle.  If you are caught reading a book, doing a crossword or writing poetry while driving, you should be sentenced to highway clean up, forced to take a driving safety course and write 100 sentences; “I WILL NOT BE A STUPID DRIVER”.  Ok, maybe the driving safety course would be too cruel and unusual.

Talk to you next week.

Take care-
